Known as the northern gateway to the Shenandoah Valley, Martinsburg is located in Berkeley County. The town was founded in 1778 by General Adam Stephen and was named to honor Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin. Martinsburg sits along the old Cumberland Trail—a major travel route in the 18th and 19th centuries—and is bordered by the Potomac River. The town became a major shipping center when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroads were constructed in the 1850s. Martinsburg changed hands several times during the Civil War. The family home of confederate spy Belle Boyd is in Martinsburg. The Boyd home is just one of many architectural masterpieces that remain from the town’s early days. Martinsburg today is a modern community with unique shopping areas, plenty of recreational opportunities, and good schools, including four private academies. The Shenandoah Valley offers a variety of things to see and do, including hiking, fishing, swimming, camping, whitewater rafting, golf and picnicking. Martinsburg’s eight city parks offer playgrounds, tennis courts, ball fields, basketball courts, fitness centers and horseshoe pits. Martinsburg is within commuting distance of the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area along I-81 or West Virginia Route 9, or by MARC train. The town also offers a variety of real estate options. Whether you seek a single-family home in a quiet neighborhood or a condominium or townhouse in a new development, you’re sure to find it in Martinsburg.
